Desert roses

2015

oil paint, pigment and pencil on wood.

Desert Roses is inspired by the film In a Better World (Susanne Bier, 2010). While the film is primarily set in Denmark, some episodes take place in an African refugee camp.
The images of the camp evoke a waiting space between two worlds, a back-and-forth between presence and absence, between identity and its negation — a metaphor for the transience and impermanence of life.
Some figures from the background of the film, veiled by swirling sand, became the inspiration for this series: apparitions from a surreal, almost invisible society to the rest of the world.
