An Eagle's Tale
The Free, the Fast, the Fragile, and the Wise

An installation in the form of a medicine wheel, with the eagle at its center as a symbol of acuity and perception, but also featuring silkscreen prints on organza, recent oil paintings, works on paper… this is what Lies Daenen presents in her exhibition An Eagle’s Tale: The Free, the Fast, the Fragile & the Wise at A Space Without Walls.
Trees and animals form a layered and harmonious relationship in her visual universe, and are the only (primary) elements that inhabit the space — without any sense of hierarchy. The wisdom of nature emerges here, both spatially and pictorially. The eagle is not only the one who flies the highest, closest to the sun, but also the bird that stands on the ground, thus bridging the celestial and the earthly.
The medicine wheel symbolizes our life path, the cycle of life and creation. It represents the circle of knowledge that empowers and encompasses all. Lies Daenen gives the animals within it a creative, visual, and uniquely personal language, where strength and the beauty of fragility form a symbiosis.
With The Free, the Fast, the Fragile & the Wise, Lies Daenen references the four directions of the wheel, which can be associated with the four seasons and the cardinal points. She imbues them with a personal and highly visual significance — for example, where the bark of a beech aligns with a butterfly, or a kind of prehistoric fish. In this exhibition, the inner, most personal world enters into a covenant with all that is universal.
