Phoenix
2017 - STUK Leuven
Pigment, charcoal, ash, pencil and acrylic on wood and paper
Sometimes complete destruction is not an end point. Sometimes fragile life finds a way through destruction. Like the Phoenix, symbol of catharsis and transformation, rising from its own ashes. In the struggle, the wound is still fully present, yet an unexpected life force also emerges.
This process unfolds on all levels of life. At one end, the mental and individual realm of experience; at the other, the vastness of the cosmos. All the building blocks of life — chemical elements — were once forged in the hearts of stars. Those stars first had to destroy themselves in order to release their precious core.
